How Often Should You Groom Your Dog?
One of the most common questions I get from new clients is “How often should I bring my dog in?” The answer depends on several factors — let’s break it down.
It Depends on Coat Type
Long and silky coats (Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese, Shih Tzu) Every 4-6 weeks. These coats grow continuously and mat easily. Regular grooming keeps them manageable and comfortable.
Curly and wool coats (Poodle, Bichon Frise, Labradoodle) Every 4-6 weeks. Curly coats don’t shed much but they mat like crazy underneath if left too long. Trust me — regular grooms save your dog from a painful dematting session.
Double coats (Golden Retriever, Husky, German Shepherd) Every 6-8 weeks, with extra attention during shedding season (spring and autumn). A professional deshedding treatment during these times makes a massive difference.
Short and smooth coats (Labrador, Boxer, Beagle) Every 8-12 weeks. These low-maintenance coats still benefit from regular baths, nail clips, and ear cleans.
Lifestyle Matters Too
Does your dog spend a lot of time outdoors? Rolling in mud, swimming, exploring the bush? They’ll need more frequent grooming than a mostly-indoor pup.
Dogs with allergies or sensitive skin may also benefit from more regular grooming with hypoallergenic products — something we specialise in at Bizzy Doggy Spa.
Puppies
I recommend bringing puppies in for their first grooming experience around 12-16 weeks of age. This first visit is all about positive association — getting them used to the sights, sounds, and sensations of grooming in a calm, one-on-one environment.
The Bottom Line
When in doubt, every 6 weeks is a solid starting point for most breeds. But every dog is different! If you’re unsure about the right schedule for your pup, get in touch and I’ll help you figure out the perfect routine.
Regular grooming isn’t a luxury — it’s an important part of your dog’s health and wellbeing. And honestly? They always seem to walk a little taller after a fresh groom. 🐾
